Pirates soar past Hawks, 5-0

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team grabbed an early lead and never looked back as the Pirates rolled to a 5-0 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Santiago Canyon on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Tino Varona led the way for the Pirates (9-1-3, 3-0-2) with a goal and two assists, while Rafael Dominguez added a goal and an assist.

Varona's two helpers both came on the first two OCC goals. In the 15th minute, Varona slipped a nice cross pass onto the foot of Dominguez, who banked in a one-timer past the charging SCC goalkeeper Lucas Clarida for a 1-0 lead. In the 32nd minute, Varona ripped a shot that was saved by Clarida, but the loose ball landed onto the foot of teammate Takumi Taniguchi, who redirected the ball into the goal, putting the Pirates up, 2-0.

Right before the end of the first half, a defensive breakdown by the Hawks led to a wide-open Varona, who took a pass from Danny Vargas and ripped a shot into the back of the net from just outside the box, sending Coast to halftime with a 3-0 advantage.

OCC continued to apply the pressure and maintained control of the things for the entire match. In the 59th minute, John Cisneros scored off of an assist from Miguel Dina before Sander Booij capped off the scoring off an assist by Dominguez.

That was more than enough offensive support for the OCC defense and goalkeeper Pablo Ramirez, who enjoyed a stress-free match with four saves.

OCC will return to action on Tuesday at home against Santa Ana, beginning at 3 p.m.
