COSTA MESA -- The second half of matches have not been too incredibly kind to the Orange Coast College men's soccer team this year and on Tuesday, the Pirates settled for a 3-3 tie with visiting Cypress College in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.
The Pirates (4-10-4, 2-6-3 in the OEC) jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead with a pair of goals from Zenden Berbari and a solo tally from Brady Powell. But the Chargers, a team that managed draws in six other matches this year, made it seven with three second-half goals to earn a valuable point in the OEC standings.
OCC goalkeeper Michael Matzuy, who made several clutch saves late in the match to keep the score deadlocked until the end, finished with seven saves, as did Cypress goalie Daniel Zamarripa.
Things looked great early on for the Pirates as they scored three goals over an eight-minute stretch midway through the first half, but Cypress (7-4-7, 4-1-6) had some chances early on as well, but just didn't couldn't find the back of the net.
That all changed in the second half when the Chargers came out fast and furious. After goals by Zeid Mansour and Alan Ambriz brought Cypress to within a goal, Isaac Morales brought the Chargers all the way back with the tying goal in the 82nd minute.
Coast will travel to Saddleback College on Friday to take on the Bobcats at 3 p.m. before returning to the OCC Soccer Complex on Tuesday against Irvine Valley, also at 3 p.m.
