Pirates pick up wins over Imperial Valley, Fullerton

COSTA MESA -- It was a strong start to the week for the Orange Coast College men's tennis team as the Pirates picked up a 9-0 nonconference win over Imperial Valley on Tuesday and a 7-2 Orange Empire Conference victory over Fullerton on Thursday.

In the win over Imperial Valley, the Pirates (8-7 overall, 4-3 in the OEC), lost just three games combined in their singles matchups. Chad Meyer, Austin Loomis and Sithiphon Chantos each went 6-0, 6-0 in their singles matches, while Andrew Pham (6-1, 6-0), Chris Chiu (6-1, 6-0) and Minh Vang (6-0, 6-1) came up a game short of perfection.

On the doubles' side, it was more of the same as the teams of Dillon Nguyen/Chris Tran and Timmy Pham and Nicholas Do each cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins, while Anthony Thai and Francisco Nguyen notched a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

In the win against the Hornets, Coast jumped out to a 5-1 lead in singles and never looked back. Dillon Nguyen needed three sets, but prevailed, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 over FC's Tim Laguna. Straight-set wins were posted by Andrew Pham (6-4, 6-2), Chiu (6-4, 6-3), Meyer (6-2, 6-3) and Francesco Nguyen (6-0, 6-0). 

In doubles, Coast picked up an 8-2 win by Andrew Pham/Dillon Nguyen and an 8-0 sweep by Thai/Francesco Nguyen.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday, April 2 at home against Riverside, beginning at 2 p.m.
