Webb's 16 kills leads Pirates to sweep away Corsairs

COSTA MESA -- The home opener for the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team proved to be a successful event as the Pirates swept past the Santa Monica City College Corsairs on Friday night.

Jim Webb paced the offense with 16 kills, while Ty Hutchins added 11 as the Pirates notched a 25-23, 25-22, 25-19 nonconference win inside the Peterson Gym.

Brendan Duff dished out 36 assists in the Pirates' win -- their second in a row to start the season.

Taylor Tattersall had 14 kills, while Tom Stoeckenger and Keats Stanley each added nine for the Corsairs (0-1).

In a match that went back and forth all night, the opening set followed that same pattern as both teams traded leads throughout. Finally, with the Pirates trailing 19-18 a crucial 4-0 run by Coast turned the lead back over to OCC. A kill and a block by Webb highlighted that mini-run.

Santa Monica responded with a 4-1 run of its own to tie things at 23, but a pair of unforced errors by the Corsairs (a serve into the net and a long kill attempt) gave Coast the points it would need to take the opening set.

Much like the opener, set No. 2 followed a similar pattern as SMCC held an 18-17 advantage before a 5-1 OCC run gave Coast a 22-19 advantage. Kills by Alejandro De Mendoza and Hutchins as well as three missed Corsair returns accounted for Coast's points.

After the Corsairs got back to within a point at 22-21, a Hutchins kill and a pair of Webb kills pushed the Pirates into a two-set lead.

The pattern continued in the third set as OCC trailed 11-8 before using a 10-4 run to lead 18-15. Three kills by Web helped spark that important run as the Pirates would not trail the rest of the night.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at L.A. Trade Tech College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Wednesday, Feb. 12 against Santa Barbara, also at 6 p.m.
