Pirates improve to 10-0 with sweep over Comets

COSTA MESA -- Jim Webb had 13 kills to lead the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team to another impressive win, sweeping past visiting Palomar on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Ty Hutchins contributed eight kills, Nick Amado added seven and Brandon Dau and Scott Metrakos each had five in the Pirates' 25-16, 25-17, 25-15 Pacific Coast Conference win, giving OCC a perfect 10-0 record to start the season (3-0 in conference).

Nick Supple and Anthony Pippen each had eight kills for the Comets (5-6, 2-2).

Coming off of a stunning five-set road win at Golden West, the Comets came into Peterson with a ton of confidence, but that win definitely sent up red flags to the Pirates, who did not take their guests for granted.

After both teams traded points, Coast went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-6 lead in the opening set. Amado and Webb each notched a pair of kills, while Trevor Burr notched an ace during that run.

Palomar would pull to within six at 21-15 before OCC closed things out with a 4-1 run.

Much like the first set, the second set saw Coast jump ahead with an early run and maintain that lead throughout. Three Palomar hitting errors and kills by Metrakos and Hutchins highlighted a 7-0 Pirate run. On the other side of the net, Coast's defense stepped up and did not allow more than a two-point run by the Comets until the set was well in hand.

The Comets hung tough in the third set and trailed, 17-13, before a pair of aces by Hutchins and kills by Metrakos, Webb, Jeff Taylor and Enrique Lopez highlighted an 8-2 run to close things out.

OCC will have a couple of tough road matches ahead -- at Grossmont on Wednesday (6 p.m.) and at Irvine Valley on Friday (6 p.m.). Coast's next home match will be on Tuesday, March 19 against San Diego Mesa (6 p.m.).
