Pirates breeze past Knights in conference matchup

COSTA MESA -- In 57 minutes, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball took care of business, defeating visiting San Diego City College, 25-11, 25-21, 25-11, in a Pacific Coast Conference matchup on Wednesday night.

Enrique Lopez led the Pirates (9-0, 2-0 in the PCC) with 11 kills, while setter Anthony Hanna dished out 18 assists.

Allen Uriarte and Yev Chernish each had six kills to lead the winless Knights (0-10, 0-3).

Chris Horner and Scott Metrakos each had a pair of kills to help spark a 14-4 run to start the opening set and the the Pirates never looked back.

SDCC picked things up and carried a 13-10 lead midway through the second set. Chernish and Uriarte found some openings through the OCC defense as the Pirates shuffled around their lineup throughout the match. 

Trailing 15-14, OCC stepped on the gas and used a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. Lopez had two kills and one assisted block during Coast's scoring outburst.

In the third set, Coast turned a 5-5 tie into a 16-8 lead, thanks to an 11-3 run, highlighted by a pair of aces and a back-row kill by Alejandro De Mendoza.

The Knights would get to within six at 16-10 before Coast finished things out with a 9-1 run.

The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Palomar, beginning at 6 p.m.
