Pirates suffer tough loss at Irvine Valley

IRVINE -- A last-second basket off of an offensive rebound put the dagger in the hearts of the Orange Coast College women's basketball team in Friday night's 55-54 Orange Empire Conference loss to host Irvine Valley on Friday night.

After an 18-0 run over a 10-minute span in the second half helped put OCC ahead 52-44 with just over six minutes left.

But the Lasers (14-7, 3-0 in Orange Empire Conference) used a dominant performance on the boards (54-34 edge) and chipped into the Pirate advantage.

Finally, with OCC leading 54-53 with six seconds left, a 3-point attempt by Amber Wharton was missed. But, the offensive rebound was tipped back to her and the sophomore hit a mid-range jumper just before the buzzer sounded to give the Lasers the win.

Danayara Armenta led Coast (9-10, 0-3) with 23 points, hitting 9-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

Jenna Arnett added 10 points and five rebounds, while Michelle Angel chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.

OCC will return to action on Wednesday at home against Santa Ana College, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
