Pirates roll to big win over Hornets
FULLERTON -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team clamped down on defense and cruised to a 59-45 win over Fullerton College on Friday night at the Hornets Nest.
The Pirates (11-11, 2-4 in the Orange Empire Conference) turned a five-point lead into a blowout by keeping the Hornets (6-14, 2-4) off of the scoreboard during a seven-minute span of the second half. By the time Fullerton found the bottom of the hoop again, OCC was head by 15 points and never looked back.
Coast took advantage of the Hornets at the free-throw line, outscoring the hosts, 19-6, from the charity stripe.
OCC's defense held the Hornets to an icy 29% from the floor (16-of-55) and 7-of-24 from 3-point range.
Danayara Armenta led OCC with 18 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Jenna Arnett and Nicky Belmares each tossed in nine points, while Michelle Angel added seven points.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home for Coaches vs. Cancer Night against Saddleback at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds from Friday's game will go the American Cancer Soceity as they continue their ongoing fight against this dreaded disease.
