Coast drops a pair at Mt. San Jacinto tourney

SAN JACINTO -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team opened the 2014 season at the Mt. San Jacinto Basketball Tournament, where the Pirates dropped two straight against Barstow and Victor Valley this past weekend.

In the opener, sophomore Jasmine Matar posted a huge night with 31 points and 10 rebounds, but the rest of the team struggled as the Pirates fell to Barstow, 60-53.

Matar hit nine field goals, including three 3-pointers and was a solid 10-of-14 from the free-throw line, but the rest of the team went a combined 8-for-36 from the field (22.2%) and turned the ball over 30 times. Kelcie Mayott added nine points and seven rebounds, while Deanna Fink was strong down low, grabbing a team-best 11 rebounds.

In the second game against Victor Valley, Coast picked up a stronger offensive effort all around and limited its turnovers, but came up short in an 82-80 overtime loss.

Nicole Beaudoin overcame a rough opener and led the way with 23 points, while Mayott and Matar each added 18. Matar grabbed 11 rebounds to lead OCC's post play, while Fink dished out a team-best four assists.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday (5 p.m.) against L.A. Valley College in a two-game tournament held at Palomar College. Coast will return to the Comets' gym on Saturday to face Rio Hondo (3 p.m.).
