COSTA MESA -- A late, second-half scoring run was too much to overcome by the Orange Coast College women's basketball team in Friday night's 77-59 Orange Empire Conference loss to visiting Saddleback College.
The Gaucho trio of Danielle Munson (25 points, 10 rebounds), Emily Cox (21 points, three assists) and Deja Brooks (16 points, 18 rebounds, six assists) led the way for the guests. Saddleback (12-11, 3-3 in OEC) drained nine 3-pointers on the night, five coming from Cox.
The loss for the Pirates (3-16, 0-5) overshadowed a strong performance from sophomore guard/forward Jasmine Matar, who led all scorers with 31 ponts, eight rebounds and five steals. Nicole Beaudoin and Kelcie Mayott each chipped in 10.
Both teams battled back and forth in the first half as Saddleback carried a slim four-point lead into the locker room (34-30). However, the Gauchos shot 17-of-31 from the floor in the second half (54.8%) and made half of their three-pointers (5-of-10) and free throws (4-of-8) to pull away from the scrappy Pirates.
Coast will return to action on Wednesday at home against Cypress, beginning at 5 p.m.
