Sophomores shine for Pirates in victory over Santa Ana

COSTA MESA -- The sophomore trio of Nicole Beaudoin, Jasmine Matar and Kelcie Mayott managed to end their women's basketball home careers with smiles on their faces as the Orange Coast College Pirates topped Santa Ana, 66-56, in the Pirates home finale for the 2014-15 season on Thursday night.

Beaudoin picked a good night for a career-high performance for the Pirates, scoring 28 points to lead all scorers. The point guard, needed only 11 shots all night as she earned her success from the free-throw line, hitting 15-of-18 from the charity stripe.

Matar struggled from the floor, but still managed 13 points and a team-best 16 rebounds and five assists. Mayott also notched a double-double on her final night inside the Peterson Gym, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Kylie Rodriguez led the Dons with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Jocelyn Calvillo added 13 points and six boards.

Coast trailed 31-23 at the half, as Rodriguez was strong down low for the Dons with 14 points and six rebounds. Beaudoin had eight first-half points, but really caught fire in the second half.

Led by Beaudoin's 20 second-half points, the Pirates outscored the Dons 43-25 over the final 20 minutes to earn the victory. Coast was 28-of-37 from the free-throw line and outscored SAC by 11 from the line which proved to be a big difference.

The Dons struggled from 3-point range, hitting just 1-of-21 from beyond the arc.

The Pirates will wrap up the regular season with a pair of road matchups -- at Saddleback College on Wednesday, Feb. 18 (7 p.m.) and on Friday, Feb. 20 at Fullerton College (7 p.m.).
