Pirates drop a pair at IVC tourney

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team put up a good fight in two tough matchups this past weekend at the Irvine Valley College Tournament, but in the end, the Pirates came up just a few points short.

In the tournament opener, Coast took on Pasadena City College and despite a strong second-half performance, the Pirates fell, 54-53. OCC trailed throughout the game, but stayed within shouting distance down the stretch.

A 3-pointer by Danielle Obong with 53 seconds left got the Pirates to within a point at 54-53 and after a steal by Jasmine Matar, Coast was fouled in the final seconds. But a missed free-throw attempt sealed the Pirates' fate in the tourney opener.

Jasmine Matar led Coast with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Bianca Gonzales added 11 points and nine rebounds off of the bench for Coast. PCC was led by Regerina Baker, who had 24 points and 19 rebounds.

In the consolation semifinals, Coast faced Rio Hondo and fell to the Roadrunners, 50-46, in another closely contested matchup.

In another come-from-behind effort, OCC grabbed its first lead (46-44) with a pair of free throws by Jasmine Matar with 2:46 left in the game.

But the Roadrunners used a pair of Pirate turnovers and held Coast scoreless the rest of the way.

Matar led the way with 29 points and 10 rebounds, but the rest of the team was held to just 17 points on 6-of-31 shooting.

The Pirates (2-7) will return to the familiar surroundings of the Peterson Gym this weekend as they host the 2014 Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic, which begins on Thursday.
