Matar shines as Pirates slip past Gauchos, 74-70

COSTA MESA -- Jasmine Matar had 26 points, 13 rebounds and four assists to lead the Orange Coast College women's basketball team to a 74-70 win at Saddleback College on Wednesday night.

The sophomore foward/guard shot a red-hot 10-of-17 from the floor and scored 20 of her 26 points in the second half to lead the way for the Pirates, who picked up their second straight win.

Nicole Beaudoin added 19 points, while Danielle Obong chipped 14 on 6-of-8 shooting.

Coast came out strong in the first half and built up a 16-point lead at the break. The Gauchos were held to just 7-of-34 shooting in the first half, but managed to pull things together in the second half.

After a Beaudoin layup gave Coast its biggest lead of the night at 45-27, the Gauchos went on a 27-11 run and trimmed the deficit all the way down to two with just 8:11 remaining.

But Matar made sure the Pirates would not give up all of the lead as she finished the night with OCC's final 12 points of the game.

Deja Brooks led the Gauchos with 24 ponts, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Emily Cox added 12 points.

The Pirates will wrap up the regular season on Friday at Cypress College, beginning at 7 p.m.
