COSTA MESA -- A slow start was too much to overcome for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team during Wednesday night's 57-46 loss to visiting Irvine Valley College in both teams' Orange Empire Conference opener.
Over the first 10 minutes of play, Coast (3-12, 0-1) was outscored 26-4 by the Lasers (14-3, 1-0) and despite a strong effort to rally, the Pirates couldn't make it all the way back.
Coast outscored IVC, 41-23, and got to within four at 49-45 with just over three minutes left in the game, but the Lasers held OCC to just one point the rest of the way.
Jasmine Matar led Coast with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Nicole Beaudoin added 10 points and three assists. For the Lasers, Breanna Turner was tough down low with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Tara Casey chipped in 17 points.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday at Fullerton College, beginning at 5 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Friday, Jan. 23 against Saddleback, also at 5 p.m.
