Pirates open second half of OEC with 7-0 win over Norco

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team opened the second half of Orange Empire Conference play with a 7-0 win over visiting Norco College on Friday afternoon.

The Pirates (9-3-2, 6-2-1 in OEC), who outshot the Mustangs 27-3 in their one-sided victory, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play and never looked back.

Sydnee Busby, the OEC's leading goal scorer, added to her already-impressive season with three first-half goals, including the aforementioned first two of the match. On the first goal, Emily Malec slipped the sophomore forward a perfect pass between a pair of Norco defenders in the eighth minute and Busby finished with a laser into the back of the net.

One minute later, the OCC duo again hooked up on nearly the exact same play as Malec again set up Busby and the Pirates led, 2-0.

In the 27th minute, Ciara Brennan carried the ball deep into Norco territory and fired a sharp-angled shot that banked off of Norco goalie Felicia Lucero and into the back of the net, putting Coast up 3-0.

Just over 10 minutes later, Lupe Rodriguez scored off of Malec's third assist of the afternoon and before the half ended, Busby capped off five-goal opening session with her third of the game off an assist from Rodriguez.

Despite playing the second half into the breeze, the Pirates again dominated play as goals by Kylie Robertson (72nd minute) and Cintia Ruiz (88th minute) sealed the deal for the Pirates.

The level of the competition greatly rises next week as the Pirates play at Saddleback College on Tuesday at 3 p.m., followed by a home matchup against first-place Santiago Canyon on Friday at 3 p.m.
