Pirates wrap up Ventura tourney with 1-0 win over West Valley

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team pulled out a 1-0 win over West Valley on Friday in the second day of the 2016 Ventura College Tournament.

The Pirates, (1-1-1), who opened the tourney on Thursday with a 3-1 loss to Santa Barbara City College, battled WVC (0-3) for over 80 minutes without either team finding the back of the net.

Finally, in the 84th minute, Aitana Vernon slipped a pass to sophomore standout Sydnee Busby, who ripped a shot past Vikings' goalie Alex Valdivia to put the Pirates ahead for good.

Tara Tellez made that goal held up as she earned the shutout win with three saves for OCC.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at Rio Hondo College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home game will take place on Friday against MiraCosta, beginning at 3 p.m.
