Pirates open season with 4-1 win over Spartans

COSTA MESA -- It was a solid kickoff to the 2018 season for the Orange Coast College women's soccer team as the Pirates rolled past visiting MiraCosta College, 4-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the OCC Soccer Complex.

After the Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, OCC came right back to even the score when Reyna Van Damme sent a shot towards goal and after the ball was deflected, teammate Delani Guyot popped in the rebound to tie the match at a goal apiece in the 36th minute.

It stayed that way for the rest of the first half before Coast turned up the pressure in the second half and ripped off three straight goals.

In the 52nd minute, Van Damme again found herself with the ball and she fought off a pair of Spartan defenders before feeding Tiffany Chantler, who used a strong finishing touch to bury her goal to put the Pirates ahead for good.

Coast made it 3-1 when MiraCosta struggled on a clearing pass and Michelle Caballero cashed in on the opportunity and ripped her shot over the out-of-position goalkeeper in the 59th minute.

Finally the Pirates added some insurance in the 75th minute when Iran Enriquez took a nice feed from Gabrielle Voorhees and found the back of the net.

In goal, Cindy Suarez was well protected by a solid defensive effort and notched a pair of saves for the afternoon.

OCC will return to action on Thursday at the Ventura College Tournament against San Diego Mesa College, beginning at 3 p.m. The Pirates will wrap up VC Tournament action on Friday against Fresno City College on Friday at 1 p.m.

Coast's next home match will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 11 against Santiago Canyon, beginning at 3 p.m.
