Guyot's late goal preserves 1-1 tie for Pirates against Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- After 85 minutes of scoreless stalemate soccer, the offense came alive for both teams as the Orange Coast College women's soccer team salvaged a 1-1 tie with visiting Golden West on Tuesday night at LeBard Stadium in a crucial Orange Empire Conference matchup.

With conference points a must for both teams, the intensity was amplified under the lights inside the OCC football stadium. Despite several top-notch scoring opportunities for both teams, the scored remained 0-0 until the 85th minute. There, GWC's Ashley Mora slipped a pass to Rachel McClure, who banked a shot into a pile of players near the OCC goal and the ball found its way into the back of the net, putting the Rustlers (10-3-3, 7-2-2 in OEC) up 1-0 late in the match.

Looking at another frustrating loss, the Pirates (5-7-4, 4-6-2) kept fighting and in the 88th minute, a long feed by Michelle Caballero found its way to teammate Delani Guyot, who fought off a pair of GWC defenders and ripped a perfect shot into the upper corner of the net to level the match at a goal apiece.

It was a solid effort for both teams as OCC goalkeeper Cindy Suarez (five saves) and GWC keeper Emma Leanos (five saves) both made big saves throughout the match to keep the other teams out of their nets.

Leanos came up with the save of the night in the 76th minute when Guyot was all alone on a breakaway and got off a nice, low shot, but Leanos came out and deflected the shot just wide of the goal.

Coast will return to action on Friday at home against Santa Ana, beginning at 3 p.m.
