Pirates turn the lights out on Gauchos, 2-0

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team enjoyed the bright lights of LeBard Stadium and put forth a solid all-around effort, defeating Saddleback College, 2-0, on Tuesday night in a crucial Orange Empire Conference matchup for both teams.

With the win, the Pirates (4-5-2 overall, 3-4-0 in conference) got even with the Gauchos (5-4-3, 2-4-2) for points in the always-crowded OEC standings.

After both teams missed on decent scoring chances, the Pirates struck first in the 20th minute when Sabrina Chantler sent in a corner kick that landed amongst a mass of soccer players near the Saddleback goal. Jane McDonald was first to the loose ball and banked in the goal to put OCC ahead for good.

It stayed that way until the 59th minute when Tiffany Chantler took a long pass from her sister, Sabrina, and beat a pair of Gaucho defenders before slipping a shot past a charging Saddleback goalkeeper and into the back of the empty net, putting Coast up, 2-0.

The Gauchos applied plenty of pressure throughout the match, but the OCC defense was up to the task as goalkeeper Cindy Suarez notched six saves for her first shutout of the season.

Jolie Moore had five saves in goal for the Gauchos.

OCC will return to action on Friday at Santiago Canyon College (3 p.m.) before returning to the OCC Soccer Complex on Tuesday to host Fullerton, also at 3 p.m.
