Pirates pull out 3-1 win over Lasers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team picked up a couple of last goals to pull past visiting Irvine Valley, 3-1, on Tuesday, in an Orange Empire Conference matchup played at the OCC Soccer Complex.

A pair of goals by Tiffany Chantler and an insurance tally off the head of Haley Auer proved to be enough for the Pirates (2-3-2, 1-2-0 in OEC).

It was a match that nearly went south for the hosts. In spite of holding a 14-2 edge in shots at one point, the Pirates watched the Lasers (2-3-2, 0-2-1) even the score at 1 with a goal off of a free kick in the 77th minute.

That fuzzy feeling for the Lasers lasted all of two minutes because in the 79th minute, a nice feed by Michelle Caballero found its way to a wide-open Tiffany Chantler. After missing on earlier high-percentage scoring opportunities, Chantler ripped a shot past the IVC goalkeeper and into the back of the net, putting the Pirates up for good.

In the 88th minute, a corner kick sent in by Sabrina Chantler was banked in off the head of Auer and into the net, putting OCC up 3-1.

OCC got on the scoreboard first when Iran Enriquez sent a nice cross-field pass to Tiffany Chantler, who put the Pirates up 1-0 in the 14th minute.

Cindy Suarez notched two saves for OCC, while the IVC goalkeeping tandem of Heather Miller and Bryana Esparza combined for six saves.

Coast will return to action on Friday at Golden West College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home match will take place on Friday, Sept. 28 against Cypress, also at 3 p.m.
