COSTA MESA -- A win is a win and for the Orange Coast College women's soccer team, even a less-than dazzling 1-0 Orange Empire Conference win over Norco College on Tuesday is greatly appreciated as the regular season nears completion.
Locked in a scoreless stalemate for most of the game in spite of controlling the majority of play, the Pirates (6-8-5, 5-7-3 in conference) finally found the back of the net in the 83rd minute.
After a free-kick opportunity was kept out of goal by emergency goalkeeper Karryn Henderson (two saves), OCC's Makena Chock sent a long clearing pass out of danger and right onto the foot of teammate Delani Guyot, who ripped a shot past Norco goalkeeper Kennedy London (eight saves) into left corner of the net, putting the Pirates up, 1-0.
That's all OCC would need as the Pirates outshot the Mustangs, 14-4, in a match that was not as close as the score indicated.
With the win, Coast maintains some hope for a playoff spot, with one match left to go in the regular season. On Friday, Coast will take on Saddleback at 1 p.m. at the O.C. Great Park Stadium.
