Pirates topple Lasers, 7-2

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's tennis team improved to 5-2 overall, 1-0 in the Orange Empire Conference with a convincing 7-2 win over visiting Irvine Valley on Thursday.

Krystal Hernandez highlighted the strong singles' play of the Pirates by outlasting Laser standout Alyssa Harper, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Her inspired effort helped put Coast ahead 5-1 after singles, thanks to straight-set wins by Maddie Koehly (6-3, 6-0), Mychelle Cyrus (6-2, 6-0), Mai Hashimoto (6-1, 6-1) and Kitty Trinh (6-1, 6-2).

In doubles, Koehly/Cyrus (8-0) and Hashimoto/Trinh (8-2) cruised to doubles wins for the Pirates.

Coast will play a make-up match on Friday at Saddleback (2 p.m.), before returning to the OCC Tennis Complex on Tuesday to host Riverside City College (2 p.m.).
