Pirates end regular season with 6-3 win over Lasers

IRVINE -- With the Orange Empire Conference tournament right around the corner, the Orange Coast College women's tennis team ended the regular season on a high note, topping Irvine Valley, 6-3, on Thursday.

Coast (9-6 overall, 6-4 in OEC) finished in third place overall in the OEC at 6-4, behind co-champs Fullerton and Riverside City colleges.

Led by straight-set wins by Maddie Koehly (6-3, 7-5), Michelle Cyrus (6-4, 6-2), Mai Hashimoto (6-2, 6-2) and Vanessa Scott (6-3, 6-2), the Pirates grabbed a 4-2 lead in singles. In the "match of the afternoon", Kitty Trinh battled IVC's Gabrielle Alviar for nearly three hours before Alviar finally prevailed 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). 

In doubles play, Nicole Pham and Koehly edged out an 8-6 win, while Cyrus and Hashimoto cruised to an 8-0 win.

Southern California Duals will kick off on Tuesday, with OEC tourney action kicking off on Thursday at OCC, beginning at 1 p.m. The tourney will continue on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
