Pirates overcome slow start, sweep past Owls

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team shook off a sluggish start and rolled past visiting Citrus College, 25-23, 25-11, 25-17, in a nonconference matchup inside the Peterson Gym on Wednesday night.

Sophomore outside hitter Danyelle Brown led the way for the Pirates (8-1) with 20 kills, while freshman Katie Duhoux chipped in 10. Setter Measha Lindstrand dished out 31 assists, while libero Alisa Ricciardi anchored the defense with 12 digs.

For the Owls (2-7), Briana Olvera had nine kills to lead the way.

Game started slow for the Pirates as Citrus jumped out to an early 9-2 lead. Olvera and Erin Murphy each clubbed two kills, while the Pirates committed a few unforced errors.

Following an OCC timeout, Coast started to turn things around. Consecutive kills by Brown, Kaitlynn Biard and Duhoux capped a 5-0 run, trimming the deficit to 9-7.

Citrus responded with three points in a row to make it 12-7, before Coast went on an 8-3 run to even the set at 15.

From there, both teams traded points before a 3-0 run by the Pirates gave them a 23-21 advantage. Again, both squads went back and forth until a Brown put-away ended the set at 25-23.

There was no further drama the rest of the night as the Pirates rolled past the Owls in the second set. With the score tied at 10, The Pirates went on a 15-1 run, sparked by three kills from Brown and two from Biard.

Set No. 3 was more of the same as Coast jumped out to a 13-6 lead and never looked back.

The Pirates will play their next two matches on the road, beginning on Friday at Palomar, beginning at 5 p.m. before opening up Orange Empire Conference play at Saddleback College on Friday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Wednesday, Oct. 7 against Cypress, also at 6 p.m.
