Chargers snap Pirates' win streak

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team saw its seven-match win streak come to an end on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-12 loss to visiting Cypress College.

Danyelle Brown led the Pirates (9-2, 1-1 in Orange Empire Conference) with 12 kills, while Kaitlynn Biard added nine kills and Katie Duhoux added eight. Alisa Ricciardi anchored the defense with 19 digs, while Duhoux added 14 and Measha Lindstrand dished out 26 assists.

For the Chargers (11-5, 2-0), who are 2-0 against Coast this year, Madison May led the way with 17 kills, while Raquel Medina added eight.

In the opening set, Coast fought hard and facing a 24-20 deficit, fought off three set points, courtesy of a Brown kill, a Brown block and a long Cypress kill attempt, bringing Coast to within a point at 24-23.

But after a Chargers' timeout, a kill by Medina brought an end to the OCC rally as Cypress won, 25-23.

Cypress used 4-0 mini-run early in the second set to jump out to a 12-7 lead and the Pirates could not get back to within striking distance the rest of the way.

It was a rough start for Coast in the third set as Cypress led, 11-1 and 22-6 before a 6-0 run by the Pirates doubled the hosts' score. Cypress regrouped and ended the match with three straight points.

Coast returns to the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Fullerton College, beginning at 6 p.m.
