Pirates cruise to straight-set win over Santa Ana

COSTA MESA -- Danyelle Brown had 13 kills, 17 digs and three aces to lead the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team to a straight-set win over Santa Ana on Friday night inside Peterson Gym.

Katie Duhoux added nine kills, while Measha Lindstrand dished out 30 assists as the Pirates (12-8, 4-7 in Orange Empire Conference) cruised to a 25-17, 25-22, 25-11 Orange Empire Conference win over the visiting Dons (1-17, 0-11).

Chloe Anderson led Santa Ana with 12 kills.

It was a back-and-forth opening set, with Santa Ana jumping out to an early 9-7 lead before a 7-1 run helped give the Pirates the lead for good. Kerrigan Hecht notched a pair of kills, during that run, as did Kaitlynn Biard.

Santa Ana stayed close at 18-16 before the Pirates closed out the opening set on another 7-1 run.

Coast looked to be on its way to a relatively easy second set, thanks to a 17-10 advantage, but Santa Ana used a 12-6 run to pull within a point at 23-22, forcing the Pirates to call a timeout.

The break worked as Coast used a long Santa Ana serve and a kill by Biard to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

There was little to worry about for the Pirates in the third set, thanks to an 18-4 run that all but sealed the match.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday night at Golden West College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Friday against Riverside, also at 6 p.m.
