Pirates make quick work of Saddleback in three-set sweep

COSTA MESA -- This time, there would be no marathon matches between Orange Coast and Saddleback as the Pirate women's volleyball team swept the visiting Gauchos in three sets on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym, 25-16, 25-17, 25-16.

Danyelle Brown led the Pirates (11-6 overall, 3-5 in the Orange Empire Conference) with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Kaitlynn Biard added 10 kills and Katie Duhoux chipped in seven kills. Duhoux and Alisa Ricciardi anchored the OCC defense with 19 digs each, while Measha Lindstrand dished out 31 assists.

For the Gauchos (4-12, 1-7), Kaylee Douglass led the offense with 11 kills.

Coast took control of the match right from the opening serve, jumping out to a 15-4 lead in the first set and cruised to a 1-0 lead in the match.

It was more of the same for the Pirates as they led throughout most of the second set. With OCC up 16-15, the hosts closed things out with a 9-2 run, capped off with a pair of kills by Brown and Duhoux.

Coast overcame a barrage of service winners by Gaucho freshman Micaela Balcaza and used an 11-2 run to grab hold of the lead for good after trailing, 5-2 early in the third set. The lead grew to as high as 21-11 as the Pirates were never threatened again the rest of the match.

OCC returns to action on Friday at Cypress College, beginning at 6 p.m. Coast's next home match will be Friday, Nov. 6 against Santa Ana, also at 6 p.m.
