Pirates pick up sixth straight win with sweep over Ventura

COSTA MESA -- Bailey Coffin and Mahina Kenoi each had 10 kills to lead the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team to a sweep over visiting Ventura in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Joceline Martinez added seven kills and four blocks for the OCC Pirates, who rolled past the VC Pirates, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 and improved their overall record to a perfect 6-0. Defensively, Terri Takita-Robins had 20 digs, Coffin added 19 and Kenoi added 13. Setter Thea Snider dished out 30 assists.

For the VC Pirates (2-5), Morgan Gallagher led the offense with 12 kills.

Orange Coast jumped out to a 9-4 advantage and had the early momentum against a VC Pirate squad that knocked Coast out of the postseason a year ago in a five-set marathon. Ventura rallied back and pulled to within a point at 20-19 before Coffin notched a pair of kills to spark a 4-1 run at a crucial time. A Martinez putaway ended the set and gave Coast a 1-0 lead in the match.

With the second set tied at 18, Martinez came alive for OCC and single-handedly put things into her own hands. The freshman middle blocker ripped three kills and added two key solo blocks during a 6-0 run that gave OCC the lead for good.

In another close set, OCC trailed 20-19 before Takita-Robins used a rare kill and an ace to spark a 4-0 run, putting Coast up, 23-20.

Following a Ventura timeout, the visiting Pirates ripped off three in a row to tie the set at 23, forcing OCC into a timeout.

But the host Pirates used a kill by Johnson and a wide return by Ventura to end the match, putting Coast in the win column for the sixth straight time to start the season.

OCC will return to action on Friday at Long Beach City College (6 p.m.) before returning to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday against El Camino, also at 6 p.m.
