Pirates pushed to the limit, but prevail over Dons in five

SANTA ANA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team needed some extra work to close out Santa Ana College, topping the Dons in five sets on Wednesday night at SAC.

Coast (9-2, 2-1 in Orange Empire Conference) overcame some erratic hitting errors (26) and held off a late SAC rally for a 25-23, 25-16, 17-25, 20-25, 15-10 win against the Dons.

Bailey Coffin came up with a team-best 16 kills and 10 digs, while Lucrezia Lualdi added 15 kills and 20 digs for the Pirates. Lily Johnson anchored the middle of the Pirates' play with eight kills and 10 total blocks (two solo, eight assisted), while Joceline Martinez added six kills and a pair of block assists.

Setter Thea Snider dished out 41 assists, while libero Terri Tokita-Robins led the defense with 22 digs.

For the Dons (3-7, 1-2), Ashly Hernandez led the way with 19 kills, while Myrandah Zepeda added 16 and Elizabeth Merold notched 11.

In the crucial fifth set, OCC jumped out to a, 8-4 advantage before Santa Ana rallied to get to within a point at 10-9. But the Dons were their own worst enemy as self-inflicted errors down the stretch were too much to overcome as the Pirates avoided the upset.

OCC will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday night to host Santiago Canyon, beginning at 6 p.m.
