Coffin set to continue at La Sierra

COSTA MESA -- Orange Coast College women's volleyball standout Bailey Coffin will be continuing her athletic and academic careers at La Sierra University in Riverside after a stellar two-year career with the Pirates.

"An amazing opportunity arose and after going to an open gym, I fell in love with the school campus, the gym, the coaches and the players," Coffin said. "The biggest deciding factor was scholarship money and thankfully they offered enough for me to be able to attend and seal the deal on an amazing opportunity."

Coffin wrapped up her sophomore year at OCC with a team-best 234 kills, to go along with 275 digs and 35 total blocks. For her career, she totaled 474 kills and 564 digs. Her 564 digs are ninth-best in the history of OCC volleyball. Twice, Coffin was a second-team Orange Empire Conference selection and she helped the Pirates to a 40-13 record with two trips to the CCCAA playoffs over her career.

"During my time at OCC, my biggest lesson I learned from playing under (head coach) Chuck Cutenese was to shake off mistakes because it does you no good dwelling on them and every point ends in a mistake," Coffin said. "Being newer to the game with only three years under my belt, I was a little bit behind everyone else but being taught to always work hard and put forth effort helped me jump ahead. Doing the bare minimum of just three hours of volleyball five days a week is not enough. This sport requires more from you if you're wanting to get better and I did just that.

"Thankfully I had a coach who noticed my work ethic and took me under his wing, pushing me because he saw more potential in me than I did in myself. He say my determination to get better every single day."

Coffin came to OCC after graduating out of Calvary Chapel HS and as a freshman, she had 240 kills to help lead OCC to a 21-6 record.

"I wish I could have played all four years at OCC but I'm excited to move on to bigger and better things and I'm blessed for the two years I did get to play under Chuck, who pushed me to be better and helped me get to where I am today."
