Pirates ground the Hawks in three

COSTA MESA -- It was a quick and efficient night for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team as the Pirates swept past visiting Santiago Canyon, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Lu Lualdi had 14 kills and 16 digs for the Pirates (11-2, 4-1 in the Orange Empire Conference), while Bailey Coffin added 11 kills to go along with 14 digs.

In the middle, blockers Lily Johnson added nine kills, while freshman teammate Jocelyn Martinez added six. Pirate setter Thea Snider dished out 30 assists.

For the Hawks (1-9, 0-5), Sarah Bethke showed off an impressing arm and led the way with 16 kills.

Coast jumped out early in the opening set and never allowed the Hawks any chance to even things back up as an early 10-6 advantage grew to as many as seven at 22-15 as OCC grabbed the opening set. Johnson, Lualdi and Coffin each had four kills as the Pirates took control of the match.

SCC had an early 9-7 lead only to see OCC go on a 10-1 run to take the lead for good. Lualdi notched four more kills during that lead-changing run and the Pirates grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match.

Coast grabbed an 18-11 advantage in the third set before the Hawks, led by Bethke's five third-set kills, trimmed the deficit to two at 22-20. But back-to-back kills by Meghan Kahle and Coffin and a misplayed pass by the Hawks gave the Pirates the final three points needed for their victory.

OCC will be on the road next week for two tough matches, playing at Irvine Valley on Wednesday (6 p.m.) and at Riverside City College on Friday (6 p.m.). OCC's next home match will be on Friday, Oct. 18 against Cypress, beginning at 6 p.m.
