Strong start for Pirates in 2017

RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team ventured out to Riverside City College for a two-day tournament and came back with three victories out of four matchups, improving its 2017 record to 7-1 for the season.

In the opener on Friday, Coast took on Ventura and cruised to a 16-7 win. Bailey Lloyd led Coast with five goals, two assists and three steals, while Sian Davis, Delaney Mazelin, Shawna Kedzie and Laurin Semmelroth each scored twice.

After a 13-6 loss to Santa Barbara City College on Friday afternoon, Coast returned to the RCC pool on Saturday and returned to the win column with a 12-5 win over Citrus. Lloyd was dominant with seven goals, while Kedzie added two goals.

In the tourney finale, the Pirates fought off a fourth-quarter surge by Cerritos College and edged the Falcons, 10-8. Coast led 9-5 before three straight goals by Cerritos pulled the Falcons to within a goal with 1:15 remaining. But on OCC's next trip down the pool, Brooke Branum iced the game with a key goal with 57 seconds remaining.

Kedzie led the offense for the Pirates with five goals. In goal, Avery Goodall had five stops against the Falcons and 32 saves throughout the entire weekend.

Coast will open up Orange Empire Conference play at Golden West College on Wednesday, beginning at 4 p.m.
