Baseball finds road success in DH sweep over Desert

PALM DESERT -- The Orange Coast College baseball team can finally cross off "win a road game" off the "2016 to-do list" after the Pirates swept a doubleheader from host College of the Desert, 2-1 and 18-0, on Saturday.

In the seven-inning opener, the Pirates (6-6) struck for single runs in the first and second innings, which proved to be just enough to get the win. In the first, a Chris Prescott triple was followed up two batters later with an RBI-single off the bat of Andrew Garcia, putting Coast up 1-0.

In the top of the second, John Balliet walked, moved up to second on a ground out and scored on an RBI-single by Thomas Waldenberger.

COD (2-7) pushed across a run in the bottom of the second, but could not get any closer as the pitching combo of Michael Giacone (2-1) and James McLellan (first save), shut down the Roadrunners the rest of the way. Giacone allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings, before McLellan closed things out with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

In the nightcap, Coast jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead and never looked back for the easy win.

Coast pounded out 17 hits and took advantage of six COD errors along the way. Nolan Powers went 4-for-7 with three runs to lead the OCC offense, while Robert Bultena added three hits and three runs. The 3-4-5-6 hitters of Eric Wagaman, Daniel Hawkins, Gehrig Vargas and Jaiden France each drove in three runs.

Casey Costello (2-1) pitched five scoreless innings and allowed three hits, four walks and eight strikeouts to pick up the win. Relievers Austin Moore, Justin Walker, Sam Eggenburg and France each tossed a scoreless inning and the foursome combined for six strikeouts.

Coast went 3-0 against the Roadrunners this year and outscored COD, 35-1 over that span.

OCC will travel to Southwestern College to take on the Jaguars on Tuesday (2 p.m.) before returning to Wendell Pickens Field to host College of the Canyons on Thursday (2 p.m.).
