Pirates find offense in 9-3 win over Santa Ana

COSTA MESA -- The on-again, off-again offense of the Orange Coast College baseball team was in full voltage on Thursday as the Pirates rolled to a 9-3 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Santa Ana.

OCC (17-18, 8-12 in the OEC) pounded out 14 hits with success up and down the lineup. Chris Prescott and J.T. Navarro combined for four hits and five runs scored at the top of the order, while the sluggers -- James McLellan, Daniel Hawkins and Jake Scott -- each drove in two runs.  Scott finished 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a run scored, while Navarro went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

After a ragged start, freshman righty Austin Moore (2-4) righted the ship and managed to last six innings to pick up the win. He allowed one run (unearned) on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Relievers Alex Hernandez and Parker Manahan combined to allow just one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts the rest of the way.

With the game tied a 1, Scott opened the bottom of the second with his second home run of the season to put Coast ahead for good. An RBI-double by Robert Teel and an RBI-grounder by Navarro capped off the three-run frame and put the Pirates in front, 4-1.

The fun continued for the OCC offense as RBI-singles by Navarro, McLellan and Scott produced all the runs in the Pirates' three-run fourth inning, extending Coast's lead to 7-1.

Finally, Hawkins finalized the run production for OCC with a two-run double to center field in the bottom of the sixth, making it 9-1.

The Pirates and Dons will wrap up their three-game series on Friday at SAC's Don Sneddon Field, beginning at 2 p.m.
