Pirates win third straight with 9-4 victory over Lasers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team is starting to find different  ways to win and on Tuesday at Wendell Pickens Field, the Pirates overcame some shaky pitching to push past visiting Irvine Valley, 9-4.

Daniel Hawkins went 2-for-3, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning, while Jaiden France added two hits, two runs and two RBI for the Pirates (14-11, 5-5 in the Orange Empire Conference). J.T. Navarro added two hits, two runs and one RBI, while James McLellan collected a hit, an RBI and scored twice.

After IVC (11-14, 2-8) grabbed a 2-1 lead, OCC snatched the lead back for good on Hawkins' three-run blast, his team-best third HR of the season. Coast took advantage of a Lasers team that scored only four runs despite having 20 baserunners (11 hits, seven walks, two hit batters). But IVC hit into a pair of double plays and stranded 14 runners as the Pirate pitchers wiggled out of several jams throughout the afternoon.

Parker Manahan picked up the win out of the bullpen, allowing no runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.

The Pirates and Lasers will play Game 2 of their three-game series on Thursday at IVC (2 p.m.) before the same two teams wrap up their series at OCC on Saturday (12 p.m.).
