Pirates leave Lasers all wet with 8-2 win

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team managed to get Friday's game in against the Irvine Valley College Lasers and the hard prep work on the field paid off as the Pirates cruised to an 8-2 win at Wendell Pickens Field.

The wet, misty conditions did not seem to hinder the eyes of the Pirates (15-12, 6-6 in the Orange Empire Conference) as they mashed out 14 hits and were never threatened the entire game.

The top of the order did the most damage for OCC as the trio of J.T. Navarro, Chris Prescott and James McLellan combined for seven hits, five runs and two RBI. Navarro went 3-for-4 with two runs, Prescott went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and McLellan went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

In addition to those Pirate sluggers, Jake Scott went 2-for-2 with two walks and an run, while Robert Teel went 1-for-4 with two RBI as the offensive success was shared throughout the Pirate lineup.

Sophomore righty Jack Pabich (3-1) overcame some early trouble before settling in and allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts over seven innings. Parker Manahan and Ryan Randel each pitched a scoreless frame to finish the game out.

Jordan Gillerman went 2-for-5 with a run and Dillon Millar went 2-for-5 with an RBI for the Lasers (12-15, 3-9).

The Coast offense overcame a brief 1-0 deficit in the first with three runs in the bottom of the frame, then, tacked on single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to pull away from IVC.

Lasers' lefty Ryan Abady (3-4) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday at Saddleback College, beginning at 2 p.m. OCC will host the Gauchos on Thursday at 2 p.m. before heading back to Mission Viejo for the third-and-final game of the series on Saturday at 12 p.m.
