Pirates rout Rustlers, 10-3

COSTA MESA -- The hits just kept on coming for the Orange Coast College baseball team as the Pirates evened their best-of-three series with rival Golden West following Tuesday's 10-3 Orange Empire Conference win at Wendell Pickens Field.
Coast (11-3, 2-3 in OEC) pounded out 17 hits against the Rustlers (11-7, 1-4) and were led by J.T. McLellan, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one run and two RBI and Jake Scott, who went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Robert Teel slugged his second home run of the season and went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while J.T. Navarro also ripped a pair of hits and scored a run for the Pirates.
Michael Giacone (4-2) picked up the win after allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Casey Costello earned his first save after throwing the final 3 1/3 innings and giving up just one run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Both teams traded two-run frames before Coast grabbed the lead for good with three runs in the third, a run in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth.
In that three-run third, Coast had the bases empty with two outs before piecing together four straight hits to grab a 5-2 lead. Andrew Garcia singled before a McLellan double brought the freshman catcher around to score. Scott followed with an RBI single and he would score on an RBI-single to right by Jaiden France.
Teel then homered to lead off the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-2 before RBI-singles by Daniel Hawkins and Teel made it 8-2 and the Pirates cruised from there.
Tyler Tungate (3-1) took the loss for the Rustlers after allowing six runs on eight hits over three innings.
The Pirates and Rustlers will wrap up their three-game series at GWC on Thursday, beginning at 2 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Tuesday, March 29 against Fullerton, also at 2 p.m.
