Pirates snap Cougars' unbeaten streak with 13-3 victory

COSTA MESA -- A pair of six-run innings did more than enough damage for the Orange Coast College baseball team as the Pirates rolled past previously-unbeaten College of the Canyons, 13-3, in a nonconference matchup on Thursday at Wendell Pickens Field.

The visiting Cougars, one of just three teams left in the state with an undefeated record heading into Thursday's play, dropped to 8-1 with the loss, while the Pirates, winners of five straight and six-of-seven, improve to 8-6.

J.T. Navarro went 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI to pace OCC's 18-hit attack, while SIX Pirates -- Chris Prescott (1-for-4), Andrew Garcia (2-for-4), Jake Scott (2-for-2), John Balliet (2-for-5), Jaiden France (2-or-5) and Nolan Powers (2-for-5) each drove in two runs.

That was more than enough run support to allow starter Jake Pabich to pick up his first win of the season. The sophomore righty allowed one run on six hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings. COC's Chase Wheatcroft (2-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in just  3 2/3 innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Canyons was one out away from holding the Pirates scoreless, but Coast came through with several two-out hits, including RBI singles by France and Bowers and two-run singles by Prescott and Garcia, putting Coast up 6-0.

After an RBI-single by France made it 5-0 in the fifth, Coast again sent 11 men to the plate and scored six more runs, capped of by a pair of two-run doubles by Scott and Balliet.

The Pirates will return to action on Saturday at home against Long Beach City College, beginning at 12 p.m.
