Pirates go 1-2 at Ventura tournament

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team opened its 2015-16 at the Ventura College Men's Basketball Tournament and the Pirates went 1-2 over the three-game event.

Coast opened things with a hard-fought, 90-88 loss to Moorpark College on Nov. 5. Jamaal Lee scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Ibrahim Gerlach added 20 points and 17 rebounds off of the bench. Kyle Lawson and Anthony Murdica each added 11 ponts, while Josh Mendoza dropped in 10 points.

In the consolation semifinals, Coast came through with a 78-72 win over Palomar. Mendoza led the way with 20 points, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range. Gerlach added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Lee added 14 points and 12 rebounds and Lawson contributed 12 points and three assists.

In the consolation championship against L.A. Valley, the Pirates came up just short and lost, 84-79. Lee again led the way with 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Mendoza added 21 points and Ryan Fusco tossed in 10 points off of the bench.

Coast will host Palomar on Wednesday, beginning at 5 p.m.
