Pirates, Seahawks battle to scoreless tie

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team was fit to be tied on Friday as the Pirates settled for a 0-0 tie against visiting L.A. Harbor in a nonconference matchup.

Both teams worked hard, but neither could find the back of the net. The Pirates (1-0-1) withstood a strong first half by the Seahawks (2-0-2), who had the wind advantage in the first 45 minutes.

Despite the breezy benefits for the Seahawks, the Pirates had the best scoring opportunity early in the first half when Brice Manning broke free and was 1-on-1 with LAHC goalkeeper Jack Moore. Manning tried to beat Moore down low and the sophomore netminder guessed correctly and kept the ball out of the goal area. Moore finished the afternoon with four saves.

OCC's goalkeeper, sophomore Nathan Brown, equaled Moore's strong play and earned the shutout with four saves.

In the second half, Coast controlled the tempo of play and nearly scored on a couple of throw-ins, but the connecting passes just missed their marks.

Both teams combined for over 30 fouls in the match and eight yellow cards -- three by the Pirates.

Coast will return to action on Tuesday night against Long Beach City College at 7 p.m. inside OCC's LeBard Stadium.
