Pirates hang on for 1-1 tie against SBVC

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer withstood a strong second-half push by San Bernardino Valley and earned a 1-1 tie with the visiting Wolverines on Tuesday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

The Pirates (1-1-2) snapped a two-match home shutout streak in the 27th minute when Ramin Amindari took a nice pass from Ryota Kaneshiro, dribbled through the SBVC defense and chipped a shot past charging goalkeeper Jonathan Lopez to put OCC ahead, 1-0.

After a stern halftime lecture by the Wolverine coaching staff, SBVC (4-2-1) turned up the energy and kept the hosts on their heels the rest of the afternoon, outshooting Coast, 12-1 in the second half.

OCC netminder Nathan Brown was up to the task, notching 10 saves, including some Grade-A looks by the Wolverines. In the 60th minute, the Wolverines had a free kick just outside of the penalty area, but their top-shelf shot was stopped by the 6-foot-5 Brown.

Defensively, Marco Randazzo came up with a big block on a point-blank scoring chance, but the ball sailed behind the goal, giving SBVC a corner kick. The Wolverines then evened the match on the CK when Jason Canahai assisted Adam Franco on the set piece.

Lopez finished with two saves for the Wolverines.

OCC will return to action on Friday at Chaffey College, beginning at 4 p.m. The Pirates' next home match will take place on Tuesday against East L.A. inside LeBard Stadium, beginning at 7 p.m.
