Scoreless stalemate for Pirates, Chargers

COSTA MESA -- Much like baseball, a soccer team can go into an offensive slump and for the Orange Coast College men's soccer team, that slump is growing following a 0-0 tie on Tuesday against Cypress College.

With the exception of a pair of 3-0 wins against Rio Hondo and Norco, the Pirates (2-3-4, 1-1-1 in Orange Empire Conference) have scored just one goal in their other seven matches.

Another strong effort was turned in by OCC goalkeeper Nathan Brown, who notched saves. But, he was matched shot for shot by Cypress' netminder Braydon Welch.

Coast had a couple of golden opportunities to break the scoreless drought. In the 19th minute, Carlos Valencia found some space and ripped a shot from around 15 yards out, but the ball rand off of the right goalpost.

In the 74th minute a crossing pass found the head Isaac Garcia, who was one-on-one with Welch. Garcia got a good piece of the cross, but Welch was able to bat the shot away from danger.

OCC's defense did a solid job of containing Cypress forward Aaren Lewis, who came into Tuesday's matchup tied for the state lead in goals with 10. Lewis managed a couple of tough-angled shots, but Brown was up to the task.

The Pirates -- 0-2-4 at home this year -- will look for their first home victory on Friday against Irvine Valley, beginning at 3 p.m.
