Pirates open season with 8-1 win over Victor Valley
VICTOR VALLEY -- The Orange Coast College men's tennis team overcame the elements to open 2014 with an 8-1 nonconference win over Victor Valley College on Thursday.
OCC jumped out to a 5-1 lead in singles, thanks to straight-set wins by Ryu Miyake (6-2, 6-0), Tokunosuke Takahashi (6-0, 6-1), David Nguyen (6-1, 6-0), Brian Dao (6-0, 6-0) and Robert Marrone (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles, it was a clean sweep by the Pirates, with wins by Takahashi/Anthony Wright (6-4, 6-4), Dao/Nugyen (6-0, 6-1) and Marrone/Luis De Jesus (6-0, 6-1).
The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday as they open their home schedule at 2 p.m. against San Diego City College.
