Morse qualifies for state at SoCal Decathlon

NORWALK -- Orange Coast College sophomore Alixander Morse earned a trip to the California Community College Athletic Association State Meet after finishing fourth overall at the 2018 Southern California Regional Decathlon, hosted by Cerritos College.

Morse took on 10 different events as well as some of the top athletes in Southern California and finished fourth overall with 5,631 points, earning a trip to State thanks to a top-six finish. Others who qualified include Mt. San Antonio's Kyle Beck (5,848), San Bernardino Valley's Derreck Affor (5,848), Southwestern's Joshua Godfrey (5,723), Cerritos' Andrew Fowler (5.560) and Riverside's Tyler Lufkin (5,535).

On Day 1, Morse finished second in the high jump (6-feet, 1 1/4-inches) to highlight a four-event set that saw him finish with a 12.15 in the 100, a long jump of 18-9 and a shot put mark of 26-5 3/4. He also placed third overall in the 400 with a time of 51.96.

On Day 2, Morse continued his fine all-around performance by finishing second in the 110 high hurdles (15.86) before ending the event with a runner-up time in the 1,500 (4:29.8). He also earned solid points in the discus (93-8), the pole vault (9-10) and javelin throw (124-2).

The CCCAA Track and Field Championships will take place on May 19-20 at American River College. For the rest of the OCC Pirates, they will compete for their shot at state, beginning on April 21 at the Orange Empire Conference Championships, hosted by Riverside City College.
