Pirates post wins over Long Beach and Golden West

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball team played a pair of nonconference matches against Long Beach City College and Golden West College to kick off the 2016 season and the Pirates earned victories in both contests.

Coast opened things with a hard-fought, five-set win over the Vikings, 25-20, 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-8. From there, the Pirates rolled past the host Rustlers, 25-15, 28-26, 25-19.

Outside hitter Adrian Faitalia led OCC (2-0) with 27 kills in the two matches, while Gianluca Grasso added 24. Grasso also had eight total aces for the day.

Middle blockers Matthew Ujkic and Austin Marriott came up big against the Rustlers with Ujkic going 4-for-6 on hits with no errors and Marriott going 7-for-11 with three errors.

Libero Tommy Casey anchored the Coast defense with 21 digs, while setter Andrew McCall dished out 76 assists.

OCC will return to action on Saturday at Santa Barbara City College, beginning at 1 p.m.
