Pirates knock Lasers' lights out in three-set sweep

COSTA MESA -- There was no power failures this time as the high-voltage Orange Coast College men's volleyball team turned the lights out on Irvine Valley College, sweeping the Lasers in three sets on Saturday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Three nights following a stoppage of play between the two clubs due to a campus-wide black out, the Pirates rolled to a 25-14, 25-13, 25-20 win against the rival Lasers in an Pacific Coast Conference matchup.

Gianluca Grasso led the Pirates (9-1, 2-0 in PCC) with 11 kills, while Adrian Faitalia added seven kills and seven digs. In the middle, blockers Matthew Ujkic and Will Donald combined for 11 kills, while Sean Keyes dished out a team-best 21 assists.

For the Lasers (4-4, 1-1), Kyle Radecki led the way with nine kills.

Much like the opening set on Wednesday night, the Pirates clicked in all phases of their game early on and jumped out to a 15-8 lead. IVC responded with a pair of points, but Coast countered with a 10-4 run to close things out.

The Lasers used a pair of Radecki kills to keep close early in the second set, before Coast erupted for a 15-4 run to pull away and grab hold of the second set.

It was more of the same for the Pirates in the third set as a 6-4 deficit was quickly erased and after grabbing an 11-10 advantage, OCC ripped of six straight points, thanks to a pair of kills by Jordan Hoppe and Grasso.

IVC refused to quit and got back to within four at 18-14, but Grasso helped the Pirates deliver the knockout blow with a pair of aces and a kill to ice the match for the Pirates.

Coast will return to action on Wednesday at Golden West College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will take place on Friday against Miramar College, also at 6 p.m.
