Pirates sweep away Comets in three

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball team had little trouble with visiting Palomar College and swept the Comets in three sets on Friday, in a Pacific Coast Conference matchup inside the Peterson Gym.

Gianluca Grasso and Matthew Ujkic each had 11 kills to lead the Pirates (12-2, 5-1 in PCC) to a 25-10, 25-14, 25-21 win over the Comets (1-8, 1-5).

Connor Matteson had eight kills to lead the Comets.

The opening set was all Orange Coast as the Pirates scored 18 of the first 22 points and never looked back. Ujkic, Casey, Mitch Holt and Adrian Faitalia each had two kills as the offense was passed around throughout the match.

Palomar showed more life in the second set and evened things at 10 before the Pirates turned up the heat and ripped off a 15-4 run to close the second set out. Grasso had five kills during that run, while Ujkic notched two of his six total blocks.

The big runs continued for the Pirates in the third set as a 6-6 tie quickly turned into a 13-7 Coast advantage as Grasso, Austin Marriott and Kevin Diniz each earned a kill and a block during OCC's 6-1 outburst.

Palomar got back to within three at 20-17 but the Comets would net get any closer the rest of the match.

OCC will begin a three-match road swing on Wednesday at Grossmont College, beginning at 6 p.m. Coast's next home match will be on Friday, April 1 against Golden West, also at 6 p.m.
