Pirates drop two against Long Beach, Southwestern

COSTA MESA -- It was a grey, dreary day at the Orange Coast College Softball Complex on Friday and for the host Pirates, the final scores did not improve their moods as the hosts dropped a pair to Long Beach (10-8) and Southwestern (7-5).

In the opener, Coast led 4-2 before the Vikings exploded for eight runs in the top of the fourth and never looked back.

Five OCC errors led to nine unearned runs and despite scoring eight runs on 12 hits and four walks, the defensive miscues were too much to overcome.

Nala Osorio went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, while Briana Covarubis, Jenna Hernandez, Daria Bair and Anna Marin added two hits each.

In the second game against the Jaguars, Coast (2-2) led 2-1 and 4-3 after the first two innings before SWC scored three in the third and added a single run in the fourth.

Osorio again had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Covarubias added two hits, scored two runs and drove in one.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15 against Santa Ana (3 p.m.) before returning to the OCC Softball Complex for a doubleheader against Rio Hondo on Saturday, Feb. 18, beginning at 11 a.m.
