Pirates battle Vaqueros to finish, but fall, 6-5

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team put up a strong fight against the visiting Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros in the third game of Saturday's three-team, tripleheader, but in the end, the Pirates came up a run short in a 6-5 loss on Saturday at the OCC Softball Complex.

SBCC (7-2) put up the first two runs, before Coast (2-8) grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI-double by Nala Osorio and a pair of RBI-singles by Carlie Chaulsett-Utley and Linnea Donahugh.

After the Gauchos tied in the top of the fourth, the Pirated quickly answered in the bottom of the fourth when Cayla Ezelle -- who finished with three hits and two RBI, lined a single to center to give Coast a 4-3 advantage.

But the Vaqueros would answer back as Slone Greeley lined a two-run single in the fifth and later added an RBI-hit in the sixth to put Santa Barbara in front, 6-4.

Ezelle's RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth scored Anna Marin and made it 6-5, but the Pirates left the tying run on third in that frame and went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end a long day of softball for all three teams.

Donahugh added two hits and an RBI and Marin walked twice and scored a pair of runs for the Pirate offense against SBCC.

Coast began the day with a 9 a.m. matchup against El Camino College and fell, 16-5. Chaulsett-Utley slugged a pair of doubles, while Osario, Hernandez, Marin, Denise Ayala and Gretchen Hom each collected RBIs against the Warriors (7-2). In the middle game, El Camino topped Santa Barbara, 8-5.

The Pirates will return to the OCC Softball Complex on Wednesday against Golden West College, beginning at 3 p.m.
