Pirates fall to Riverside

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team dropped to 0-2 in Orange Empire Conference play (2-5 overall) with a 9-1 loss to host Riverside City College on Wednesday.

The Pirates managed just three hits against RCC starter Laura Mendez, who pitched all five innings and struck out three to collect her third win of the season.

Trailing 3-0 after the first inning, OCC scored its lone run in the second when Anna Marin walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI-single by Kaylin Etheridge. Coast had second and third with nobody out in that frame, but could only manage the one run and from there, Riverside (4-4, 2-0) pulled away, scoring six runs over the next three innings.

Nala Osorio and Briana Covarrubias each collected doubles for Coast, but five OCC errors and 11 hits by the Tigers did in Pirate pitcher Carlie Chaulsett-Utley (2-5).

The Pirates will return to action Friday at home against Cypress, beginning at 2 p.m.
